During period of my exploring the area of Upper Austria, I’ve also decided to visit Steyr. It is 3rd largest town in this region, with the two rivers Steyr and Enns flowing through it and meeting near the town center beneath Lamberg Castle and St. Michael’s Church. Steyr has a beautiful, historical town center, even more charming during Christmas season. On the main square, you could see many old buildings from different epochs, Gothic and Baroque architecture.

The Christmas Market
I’ve visited Steyr during period of Christmas season and it had even additional charm. Its famous historic town center built around the town square has been decorated with different ornamentals over the more Christmas trees. Impressive historic buildings has been decorated with a lot of lamps and luminous decorations.

Here you could see the Bummerlhaus that is one of the best preserved Gothic buildings in the country. I’ve just enjoyed in the warmness of the town.

In the center of the town square, you could experience Steyr’s Christmas market. Near the big Christmas tree, you could find charming wooden hoses, where you could buy hot wine and other warm drinks. Also, you could try different kind of foods and sweets.

After enjoying smells and tastes of the Christmas Market, I continued through the main street. You could see different small shops, on the both side of the street. Then I came to the bridge over the river Steyr. Just cross the bridge, you could see the Michaelerkirche, noticeable since the large painted fresco on the church roof gable. It is a catholic church, constructed in the 1600’s under instructions of the Emperor Ferdinand II.

After a walk near beautiful historic buildings and cozy town center, you could visit the Schloss Lamberg. The huge castle that dominates over the town, notable since its baroque style and a beautiful English garden which you could walk through.

Since I’ve explored the town during the winter period, I decided to warm myself and enjoy some Austrian gastronomy. Restaurant Jedermann’s is a really good and I’d like to recommend it. Here you could eat a great Wienerschnitzel, steaks, risotto or paste prepared on some special and domestic way.
I’ve been in Steyr just before the Christmas and I’ve also visited famous Christmas post office, opened in 1950. The post office has zip code A-4411 Christkindl (Jesus child) and I’ve also send a Christmas card from there. A huge number of letters and cards have been send from this post office, every year during period of Advent. Here you could also visit a beautiful church, buy a very nice Christmas souvenirs and visit exhibition of Nativity scene.

I have really enjoyed this picturesque, cozy town. So, please remember to visit it when you are in the area of Upper Austria or when you thinking of the next Christmas Market to visit.
